Client Overview

A demolition business scaling across states.

Our client is an established demolition contractor with locations across multiple U.S. cities and states. When they came to Hexapoint in 2021, they were looking to improve overall online exposure and website traffic for every individual location.

Two years and 15+ locations later, the client now ranks at #1 for more than a dozen high-intent commercial keywords and inside the top 3 for many more — and the curve is still climbing every quarter.

In the past 6 months alone, the client's total search impressions grew by more than 84,000 and total clicks grew by nearly 50,000. The compounding has not slowed down.

The Challenges

Two structural problems we had to solve at scale.

  • i.

    Zero National Visibility

When the client first partnered with Hexapoint in 2021, the business was not ranking at all for the search terms that should have been the easiest wins given their service area and operational footprint.

    • Not ranking for "Demolition New Jersey" or any equivalent statewide query.
    • No 3-pack presence on local "demolition near me" searches in any market.
    • Website unable to differentiate state vs. city vs. neighborhood intent.
    • No structured data telling search engines where the business actually operates.
  • ii.

    Multi-State Coordination

Operating across multiple states is not just a content scaling problem — every state has its own competitive landscape, its own keyword dynamics, and its own citation ecosystem. Generic SEO would never have produced consistent results across all of them.

    • Every state needed its own keyword and content profile.
    • Every city needed its own page architecture and internal linking.
    • GBP coverage had to be uniform and uniquely optimized per location.
    • Citations and backlinks had to be built per-location, not just per-brand.
Our Strategy

A multi-pronged local SEO approach.

We built out state pages followed by city pages, comprehensively optimized to drive organic traffic and earn SERP positions for both. Each tactic below stacks on the ones above it — the compounding came from the order.

  • 01

    Targeting Hyper-Local Keywords

Each web page was optimized for location-specific terms layered with neighborhood and county names. We targeted general terms on city pages and broader state-level terms on state pages that fed traffic down into city pages.

    • State-level queries: e.g. "demolition New Jersey," "demolition Connecticut."
    • City-level queries: e.g. "structural demolition Newark," "commercial demolition Hartford."
    • Hyper-local queries: e.g. "bathroom demolition Essex NJ," "interior demolition Passaic."
    • General-intent queries on city pages: e.g. "demo near me" anchored to each market.
  • 02

    Adding GeneralContractor & Organization Schema

We added Organization schema — specifically GeneralContractor schema — to the client's web pages and differentiated the schema between service pages, About Us pages, and contact pages. This made it easier for search engines to understand and categorize every page.

    • GeneralContractor schema on every service and location page.
    • Organization schema on the About page.
    • BreadcrumbList schema across the site.
    • Differentiated schema by page type so search engines knew exactly what each page was for.
  • 03

    Building Out Authoritative Content

We created high-quality content optimized with neighborhood entities and built extensive supporting content for each target location. Featured snippets followed — appearing at the top of competitive SERPs and pulling significant traffic.

    • Topic clusters: 'Types of Demolition in NJ,' 'Economic Impact of Demolition in NJ,' 'Sustainability Practices for Demolition in NJ.'
    • Supporting content tuned to each state and city.
    • Featured snippets earned on multiple high-intent queries.
    • Internal linking back to state and city hub pages from every supporting article.
  • 04

    Optimizing & Managing GBPs

Every GBP was reviewed for service and product descriptions, and each received monthly posts to increase the volume of keywords and entities associated with the business at each location. Geo grids now show consistent top-3 rankings across entire targeted regions.

    • Service and product descriptions on every GBP, written per location.
    • Monthly GBP posts adding fresh signals to every profile.
    • Geo-grid coverage now shows top-3 rankings across entire target metros.
    • Consistent ranking across multiple locations simultaneously — no single-market dependency.
  • 05

    Local Listings & Citations

We built local listings and citations for each target location, with every citation and GBP linking to the corresponding location page — signaling cleanly to search engines that the business has multiple verified physical locations.

    • Citations built per-location, not per-brand.
    • NAP consistency policed across every citation source.
    • Every citation and GBP linked to the corresponding location page.
    • Clean structural signal to search engines about the multi-location footprint.
  • 06

    Backlinks, Reviews & Credentials

High-quality backlinks across target pages drive authority and rankings. A built-out portfolio page plus showcased reviews handle the credibility side — which matters as much in local SEO as it does in any high-consideration consumer category.

    • High-quality backlinks built to state and city hub pages.
    • Portfolio page expanded with completed-project case content.
    • Reviews and credentials showcased prominently on the location pages.
    • Trust signals reinforced at every conversion touchpoint.

Before / After

Direct challenge resolution.

  • Previous Challenges

Where the business stood when the engagement started in 2021.

    • Not ranking at all for "Demolition New Jersey" or equivalent state queries.
    • No 3-pack presence in any local market.
    • No structured data telling search engines where the business operates.
    • No state-vs-city-vs-neighborhood content differentiation.
  • Achieved Outcomes

After sustained execution across all 6 strategy pillars.

    • Ranking in top 3 for "Demolition New Jersey" for the last 2 consecutive years.
    • 15+ locations holding 3-pack positions on their highest-intent local queries.
    • GeneralContractor + Organization + BreadcrumbList schema across the site.
    • State, city, and hyper-local pages each ranking for their intended keyword tier.
What This Means

Lessons for any multi-state business.

Local SEO done right is not a one-time project — it is a compounding asset. The principles below are why this engagement is still gaining ground 2+ years in.

  • 01

    Sequence Matters

State pages, then city pages, then hyper-local pages. Schema, then content, then citations, then GBP, then links. Doing them out of order wastes months.

  • 02

    Per-Location Discipline

Multi-state SEO is not one campaign — it is N campaigns running in parallel. Citations, GBP, and content all have to be tracked and tuned per location.

  • 03

    Local SEO Compounds

Citations, content, and backlinks built today are still producing visibility two years later. The defensible asset is the cumulative position, not any single tactic.

  • 04

    Featured Snippets Are Underrated

High-quality, well-structured content earns featured snippets, which sit above the organic results entirely. The traffic premium is significant and durable.

Frequently Asked

Multi-state SEO, answered honestly.

How long does multi-state SEO take to drive measurable results?

State and city page rankings typically start moving in months 2-4. The first 3-pack wins on competitive local queries come in months 4-9. The big compounding inflection — where every additional month of execution feels like it produces more visibility than the previous one — usually arrives around month 12 and continues from there. This client is 2+ years in and still gaining ground.

Do you build separate state and city pages, or one page per location?

Both. State pages rank for broad statewide queries (e.g. "demolition New Jersey"). City pages rank for city-level queries. Hyper-local neighborhood content sits below the city pages. Each tier is internally linked so authority flows down from broad to specific — never the reverse — and keyword cannibalization is avoided by careful per-page scoping.

How do you avoid duplicate-content penalties across so many location pages?

Every location page is written with unique on-page content tied to that specific market — neighborhood entities, project examples from that area, local-economy context, citation profile. We do not use template-with-fill-in-the-blanks content. Every page reads like it was written for the place it represents because it was.

How important is GBP for a multi-state business?

Critical. Every individual location needs its own optimized GBP, populated with service and product descriptions, posted to monthly. We also link every GBP directly to the corresponding location page on the site — not to the homepage. This is one of the strongest structural signals to search engines that the business has multiple verified physical locations.

Does this approach work for industries other than demolition?

Yes. The structure — state pages, city pages, hyper-local content, per-location GBPs, per-location citations, schema, internal linking discipline — is industry-agnostic. We have run the same pattern in healthcare, retail, professional services, and trades. The specifics change. The structure doesn't.
